There had been many changes during his time away. Good. Bad. Worse. But the world kept on spinning and humanity kept right on living. And the darkness… that had returned as well. For a little while, anyway. It seemed that there were still several tricks up the sleeves of those around.
Maybe…
…maybe Lucifer had been right all along. …In a way. Maybe it was Michael who had been the one in the wrong. The one blinded by the loyalty and overzealous dedication to a Father who he hadn’t seen in what felt like forever now.
He should have walked off the playing field when offered the chance. When offered that out. Instead, he had continued to play the role of the good son. To follow the plan as written. In doing so, it had gotten him trapped along with Lucifer. His story, it seemed, had also found its end.
Was that really supposed to be how the story went? Was that the real plan all along?
Was he wrong? Was every action; every step taken, wrong? Was there a misinterpretation of the written words? In the message and plan, as it was conveyed?
Was he…
…was he a failure? Was he not the good son he always tried to be? Had he caused all of this in his blind devotion to a Father who had left; who had abandoned them?
His brows furrowed a bit more as he frowned to himself, fingers tightening against the strap of the backpack slung over his shoulder.
For the first time, there was doubt in Michael’s mind.
Tipping his head back, blue eyes were cast skyward as he looked at the heavens above. Where did an Archangel turn for guidance when they were no longer sure of what they needed to do? Where did they look for comfort
His gaze shifted back to the horizon as he finally smiled a bit to himself, a soft, brief chuckle escaping past dry lips. There was time to figure things out finally. Time to see what was going on. And perhaps enjoy this world a little. There was so much beauty around that he hadn’t quite noticed before. Hadn’t quite appreciated too much before now. It was funny how that worked out. How things had decided to go. All those millennia ago, he had bowed when his Father had commanded them. But he hadn’t really understood what it meant to truly be able to love these creatures more than his Father, himself.
Maybe he could learn the meaning of that finally.
The story was still continuing, after all. The balances were once more returned to their righted position. The one thing Michael had working in his favour right now, he knew, was the element of surprise. He was sure that nobody exactly realised he was quite back just yet. And he was going to use that to the best of his advantage. Figure things out. Work out a game plan of his own, whatever it may end up being.
Maybe learn to be less strict with everyone, too. Perhaps… perhaps it had been that strictness that had helped to lead to the unfolding of events how they happened.
A slight frown creased his features once more as he shook his head. No. Now wasn’t the time for self doubt. For those broken thoughts to once again try to slowly creep back to the foreground of his mind.
Michael may have been a bit broken, but he wasn’t beyond repair. All he needed to do was find his way once more. Find that light and the path, and follow it back home.
